Fantasy
Definition
The fantasy genre covers a range of plots, characters, and settings that can be both realistic and unrealistic. This includes unworldly elements, magical adventures, made-up creatures and imaginary characters. Make believe is what this genre is all about!
Characteristics
Some characteristics of the fantasy genre include:
- A conflict between good and evil
- Contains elements that are not realistic
- Talking animals
- Magical powers
- Set in a medieval universe (see back)
- Involves mythical beings (i.e. dragons)
- Provides a moral or life lesson
- Insight to put up with human struggles and values
- Involves imaginary characters in places, events, and problems that may seem real
Examples
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfe: A 12-year-old tries to restore his family fortune by capturing a fairy, but the fairies fight back.
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamill: The adventures of a small mouse with unusual talents.
Fablehaven by Brandon Mul: Two children discover a sanctuary for magical creatures and that a battle between good and evil is looming.
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan: A 12-year-old demigod learns he is the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea, and must go on a quest in order to prevent a war between the gods.
