“Hunted” Summary (Chap. 6)

Okay, so A LOT happened in “Hunted” (chapter 6 of Earthsea) and if you’re anything like me, you probably had to read through it twice to really understand what was going on! Here is a summary of “Hunted” that will hopefully help make sense of the events that unfolded:

Before he leaves Low Torning, the townspeople hold a celebration for Ged for beating the dragons. Ged tries to sail back to Roke, but the island is protected by a magical wind keeping bad things away, so Ged is dropped off on the island of Serd. One important thing to note: Ged didn’t have to pay for the ride because a “wizard’s staff is passport and payment on most ships.” (KEEP THIS IN MIND FOR YOUR SHORT ANSWERS!)

Ged keeps running from the shadow and from Serd, he takes a trip to Havnor, but stops in Orrimy where a man tells him to go to the Court of the Terrenon on the island of Osskil. It is said there is an anti-shadow sword there. Ged gets on a ship and sails to Osskil, but must travel as a rower since the caption of this ship is a magician.

A man on the ship name Skiorh walks with Ged towards the Court of the Terrenon, but Ged soon finds that Skiorh is possessed by the shadow monster. The shadow monster somehow knows Ged’s true name and uses it against Ged, which means Ged can’t use magic so he has to run away.

The next thing you know, Ged is running up a hill towards a house with an open door. Right before he slips into a coma (for the fourth time in this story, by the way), Ged makes it through the door.

Whew! There is a lot going on in this chapter! To keep up with all of the islands Ged travels to, check out the map below or the map that I handed out in class. The map below isn’t very big so your handout will be better, but they will help you to understand setting and location of Ged’s travels.

CRITICAL THINKING: During my second read-through, I realized the title of the chapter was extremely important. After reading the chapter and the summary, do you have any guesses as to why chapter 6 is titled “Hunted”?
